'Hamd' means literally to praise, to express the qualities, to acknowledge the excellence, to acknowledge one's master. The only one to get this praise is Allah the Almighty. 'Hamd' were written ever before poetry first encountered in the Urdu language. The 'Hamd' has permanent genre status in literature because of its theological and literary significance. It is not merely a tool to quell our nervous emotions, fear of God, confirmation of insight and vision, or poetry for poetry's sake. This work explores the literary standing and customs of 'Hamd' in Indian regional literature.
