While at the pool, my daughter-six years old at that time-befriended another little girl, who didn't quite look like her. After we got home, she came to me later that night sobbing, and I asked her why she was upset. She responded that she wondered why her friend had different colored eyes, skin, and hair than she did. I was stumped on how to exactly explain this to a six-year-old without confusing her, as I was not expecting this query from her. I gave it a thought for a minute, and I responded to my daughter by telling her she was fearfully and wonderfully made by God, and that He made us all different but beautiful in our own unique way. In conclusion, this conversation with my six-year-old inspired me to express to her how I feel by writing a book. But after I started writing, I decided this isn't just for my daughter but for other little girls everywhere of all ages, so that they, too, will know that even though they look different, they are all lovely despite their size, shape, nationality, different texture of hair, etc.
