The present study attempts to understand the association between mother's anaemic condition and its impact on pregnancy outcomes and nutritional status of children in north-eastern states of India. The study has used data of third round of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3) which is conducted during 2005-06. NFHS-3 collected information from a nationally representative sample of households, women age 15-49 and men age 15-54 in all 29 states. The outcome variables are pregnancy outcome (comprised with preterm delivery and low birth weight, and experience of termination) and nutritional status (comprised with underweight, stunting, and wasting). The key explanatory variable is level of anaemia (categorized into three categories, severe/moderate/mild). Bi-variate and multivariate analysis is used to examine the impact of anaemia level on selected outcome variables. Findings show that preterm delivery or premature birth is crucial outcome seen among anaemic mothers, and the studyshows a U-shaped relationship between maternal haemoglobin concentration and preterm delivery, low weight of birth, and experience of preterm delivery in North-east India.
