Present Book is an outcome of project work conducted in the Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies, Himachal Pradesh. The jobless growth in the 1990 s, stagnation or even decline in the growth of agricultural productivity, distressed farmers committing suicides in various parts of the country, increased migration from rural to urban areas were the larger socio-economic context of the MNREGA 2005. Employment creation is an important policy instrument in low and middle-income countries where rates of unemployment and underemployment are high, the employment intensity of growth is low or is showing a downward trend, and macroeconomic shocks or natural disasters can undermine livelihoods and require income-stabilizing interventions. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)provides a legal guarantee for one hundred days of employment in every financial year to adult members of any rural household. In the present study an effort has been made to analyse the performance of MGNREGS in the tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh. Keeping in mind the objectives of 'Bharmour' tribal block of the state had been selected for the field study.
