Census data shows that there is a population of 20 million in Sri Lanka and the available land mass is only 65,610 SqKm. Major industrial parks of Sri Lanka generate about 30 million cubic meters of waste water every year. (Quoted from Central Environmental Authority) By law it is mandatory for waste water that is discharged to inland surface water for irrigation purposes should undergo secondary treatment. As stated by the Central Environmental Authority approximately 10% of wastewater that is discharged to the environment does not undergo any treatment at all. The aim is to identify the importance and socio - economic aspects of wastewater treatment.
