Indian Railway is at a transitional juncture where at the one end there is growing expectation from the freight customers for better facility in terms of transportation of thier commodity timely, sufficient availability of wagons, goods sheds etc. On the other hand there is acute resource crunch to make future devlopement. The Indian Rialways has to search ways and means to find a fine balance between the two to keep the Railways growing and improving. In this book the author has made an attempt to understand the problem and find some workable sollution in the existing frame work to boost the performance of the Indian Railways. The author has identified port as future area fo devlopement and suggested to make all round devlopement of better connectivity of port and hinterland. This can further be supplemented by solving the problem of capacity constraint in terms of running extra freight train, availablity of extra wagon, locomotives, goods sheds etc. Providing better customer satisfaction, in terms of gauranteed wagon supply, gauranteed delivery, introduction of Tatkal Scheme of wagon allotment along with partial bidding of wagon are some of the other suggestions.
