In Bed with Procrustes: Feminism's Flirtation with Patriarchy is the second volume in a "Hestia Trilogy". It continues Professor Thompson's exploration of the Hestian/Hermean Dual Systems Paradigm, introduced in The Accidental Theorist: The Double Helix of Everyday Life. Drawing on two ancient Greek mythemes - Hestia, guardian of the "homeplace" and Hermes, guardian of the "marketplace" - she introduces a metaphorical language with which to examine the private/public, civic/domestic, familial/political aspects of the human condition to reclaim the family ecosystem as a site for feminist theory. She challenges "one size fits all" theories based on patriarchal paradigms (the "bed of Procrustes") and suggests how a Hestian feminist perspective can be applied to the academic disciplines of classics, philosophy, history, political science, sociology, psychology, economics, and ethics.

Rezensionen
"In 'The Accidental Theorist', Patricia J. Thompson lays down the foundation for her Hestian/Hermean Dual Systems Paradigm as a feminist theory of hearth and home, a theory that sets forth a nongendered approach to understanding our private/public obligations. With 'In Bed With Procrustes', book two of the Hestia trilogy, she applies the principles of her paradigm to a wide range of academic disciplines: the classics, philosophy, history, political science, sociology, economics, and psychology. In her application of systems theory, Dr. Thompson breaks traditional boundaries that have separated these disciplines, enabling the reader to see how they interface and interconnect. As she weaves her theory through the disciplines, the author takes her readers on many interesting paths. From her wonderful retelling of Greek classic tales and her comparison of the Kennedy family misfortunes to Greek tragedy, her discussion of Marx and Engels, her insights into Freud and Jung, her critiqueof some contemporary feminist theories, reading this book becomes a rich, exciting, exhilarating, intellectual voyage from which one returns home with a deeper understanding and appreciation of family values. Dr. Thompson's theory will enable academicians to work in a less contentious and more cooperative fashion so that society's problems may be more readily and humanely addressed. Her theory can lead to increased interdisciplinary exchanges - a desirable and worthy undertaking." (Arline Bronzaft, Professor Emerita of Psychology and former Director of Women's Studies, Lehman College, City University of New York)
"Patricia J. Thompson understands the work-family connection. By addressing the unpaid work of the homeplace and the paid work of the marketplace within the same paradigm, she makes an important contribution to feminist theory." (Susan Ginsberg, Author of Family Wisdom )
