There are a huge number of non-fiction studies of Lincoln, his life and times, and his death. From these works we draw the information about the assassination, but to tell the story for the satisfaction of the general reader, the novelist's challenge is to bring the characters to life, to make them real people, motivated by the wide range of human emotions common to all people, past, present, and future. The story can be shaped and controlled in a way which makes it understandable and in more satisfying ways than are found in most non-fiction accounts, without sacrificing the facts.
