From 1976 to 1979 the author was a forester for International Paper Company in northern Maine. With the aid of watercolor illustrations, the author describes with wonder his experiences living and working there. Some of the things depicted include a ninety-eight-mile canoe trip on the Allagash River, logging camps, snowshoeing across a lake in a blinding snowstorm, checking beaver traps by snowmobile, wildlife tracks in the snow, a tragic death, moose and ice fishing. It closes expressing gratitude for those who befriended and invested in the inexperienced author. Daniel W. Fink has spent his career as a forester in Maine and the Pacific Northwest. He loves wild and remote places. He lives with his wife Carol in Sandy, Oregon. They love hiking, and volunteering to serve and teach the children in their church. Carrie grew up wanting to work at Walt Disney Studios as a background artist. She is inspired by a love of the world's nature, especially Oregon's, by Disney animation and classical music.
