This is the first full-length comparative academic study of the four major figures of the New York School of poets: John Ashbery, Frank OOHara, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler. Applying recent theoretical advances in the study of avant-garde and experimental writing, the book puts forward an alternative method of reading postmodern poetry based on the need for concentration on the poem as in process, rather than a finished product.
