Identification of any orofacial abnormality at its earliest is very much essential. In developing countries like India, awareness regarding malocclusion and orthodontic treatment is still lacking in most parts of the country. Improved dental esthetic status of an individual is not only essential for esthetics but also essential for the proper development and function of orofacial structures. Studies on the prevalence of malocclusion will help the concerned health authorities to plan proper preventive dental health care strategies in a given population. Thus, this review aims to know the prevalence of malocclusion in any society or community as it reveals the true extent of the upcoming problem and thus necessary preventive, interceptive and corrective measures can be accomplished.
