The Index librorum prohibitorum was a directory of the Roman Inquisition that listed for every Catholic the books whose reading was considered a grave sin; for some of these books, the ecclesiastical punishment was excommunication. First published in 1559, its last official edition dates from 1948 with supplements until 1962, and most recently listed 6000 books. The index was actually only abrogated in 1966 under Pope Paul VI.
