The current high comfort companies are discarding a tyre of about 9 to 10kg, per inhabitant and per year. These tires are not a hazardous waste, but their shape brings health problems and major difficulties in their final disposal. The processing of this waste is a dilemma, since the intrinsic value of the goods that constitute it is high, but its use creates logistical and technological difficulties that make the recycling processes have high costs. This difficulty is compounded by the disparity in the nature of the materials used to manufacture the tyre. This work analyzes the legislation that implements the Used Tire Management System, its practicability, opportunity, limits and inconsistencies. The solution adopted in Portugal is compared with the solutions implemented in other countries. The use of low-cost and easily implemented industrial techniques that allow the consumption of rubber granulates resulting from tyre recycling in large quantities and that can represent environmentally and economically efficient solutions for the recovery of these recycled materials is also assessed.
