In Africa, women play a very critical role in enhancing household food security. Ensuring women have access to financial services is therefore a key tenet in ensuring households are food secure. Whenever women cannot meet their need for capital, they always settle for sub-optimal methods in so far as food production is concerned. This kind of scenario has often manifested itself in powerlessness among women and their inability to participate in decision making on health, economic and social issues. Savings and Loans Associations programming have come in handy to meet the credit needs of rural women who cannot access such facilities from the formal banking systems for lack of collateral. The influence these Savings and Loans Associations as revealed by this book is that they have empowered women enhancing their ability to ensure availability, access, adequacy and proper utilization of foodstuffs at the households.
