Detective Derek Adler made a name for himself in New York City after dismantling the case of the Velvet Mist. He spent the Jazz Age dancing and making one-night connections, allowing whispers to follow him during Prohibition as he ended his nights stumbling loosely back home, making a fool of himself and attracting trouble. Born with a chip on his shoulder, he could do no wrong, and well into the Great Depression, he remained beloved. Beloved by all, except by James Anderson, who vowed many years ago to expose the detective for who he really was: a liar and a coward. It isn't until a simmering summer in 1936 that the men's paths permanently intertwine, stringing together the horrid truths of the Velvet Mist case and hesitantly recognizing themselves in one another with time.
