La Shawn Kelley is currently employed by the federal government as the Chief, Human Capital Management Office for an agency of the Department of Defense. With over 25 years of experience in human resources, she has worked in both the private and public sectors as a human resources and human capital professional. Over Kelley's personal life and professional career, she has provided mentorship to students, colleagues, and other professionals. Kelley holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Claflin University (Orangeburg, SC) and a Master of Arts degree from George Mason University (Fairfax, VA). She has also written two self-help books, Preparing for Success in Corporate America - College Guide (2006) and Corporate Navigation - Charting Your Success (2012). Kelley navigates through life with a positive attitude and views herself as a "glass is half-full" kind of person. She firmly believes that people with a positive attitude and optimistic outlook will see and find opportunities that others simply will not. One of her favorite quotes is by Cadet Maxim: "Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is wise. Expect more than others think is possible." Inspiring African-American Women of the Civil Rights Movement - 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries is a turning point for Kelley, as she wants to focus more of her love for writing on books geared toward younger readers. She sees this as a great opportunity to broaden and help shape the lives of the younger generation. A native of Florence, S.C., Kelley currently lives in Northern Virginia with her family. She is also a motivational speaker who believes that self-empowerment, self-awareness, and self-motivation are the ingredients necessary to take control of our lives, reach our full potential, and transform our goals into desired actions and outcomes. While writing is her passion, Kelley also enjoys reading a variety of books, traveling around the world to explore other cultures and as many Caribbean islands as possible, and preparing specialty recipes for her husband and biggest fan, Andre. Kelley is looking forward to publishing more books on the historical achievements of Africa-Americans and other types of children's books. She is also working on completing her first cookbook and trying her hand at playwriting. This is Kelley's third published book. La Shawn Kelley values and welcomes your feedback.
