Currently, bridge is inspected annually through visual inspection where rating is assigned by bridge inspectors to characterize the bridge condition. This rating is subjected to the inspectors' experiences and engineering judgement. This book provide an approach of combining nondestructive testing together with other bridge parameters and previous inspection record in developing an intelligent tool to assist bridge inspectors in rating the bridge condition thoroughly. The intelligent system makes use of the artificial neural network concept in providing the condition rating. This book provides step-by-step procedures in developing the intelligent system starting from data gathering on bridge records, execution of the nondestructive testing on bridge structures, and development of the artificial neural network system which include data training and testing. The approach used in this book can also be extended to other structure like buildings.

Dr. Sophia C. Alih is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Structure and Materials, Faculty of Civil Engineering, UTM JB and a Research Fellow of Institute of Noise and Vibration, UTM. Apart from her academic profession, she has been involved in several consultancy projects for bridge and building inspection in Malaysia since 2004.
