Millions of people around the globe with different first languages are communicating through the English language as a lingua franca in world forums, in conferences, in business meetings, academic discussions, or sports events, to name a few. In this sense, English has indeed reached a global dimension no other language has come near before. In words of Van Parijs "it is English and English alone that can reasonably claim to have become a global Lingua Franca".
