St. Teresa of Avila was born in 1515 into a prominent Spanish family. At 20, she joined the Carmelite order, facing illness and spiritual doubts, but her experiences of mystical visions deepened her devotion. Amid a period of religious reform, she became a spiritual leader renowned for her profound connection with God and mysticism. Her major contribution was reforming the Carmelite order, pushing for simplicity and prayer. Alongside St. John of the Cross, she founded the Discalced Carmelites, though faced resistance from both within and the church authorities, relying on faith to persevere.St. Teresa's writings, Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, explore the soul's path to divine union, establishing her as a key figure in Christian mysticism. In 1970, she became one of the first women named a Doctor of the Church, leaving a legacy that continues to shape spiritual and theological thought.
