HANS SINGER is Professorial Fellow, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex; Emeritus Professor since 1980. His publications include, as author, Growth, Development and Trade, International Development, Growth and Trade and he is co-editor of Conflict and Change in the 1990s, (with Anthony Carty) and Economics Development and World Debt (with Soumitra Sharma). D.J.SHAW has known and worked with Hans Singer for almost forty years. He was associated with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for over thirty years. Latterly, he served as WFP's economic adviser and chief of WFP's Policy Affairs Service. He has written extensively on development and food aid issues, and is on the International Editorial Board of the journal Food Policy.
