Doctors try their best to keep up to date in their field; to find the time and energy to read professional journals and attend in-service training. To retain the integrity of the whole, other professionals in the medical context must do likewise. Given the increasing multi-lingual population of patients, the importance of interpreters and translators is being recognised. Qualified interpreters and translators are trained, like doctors, to keep on top of new developments related to their expertise. This book sets out how they might do this by adding new knowledge and understanding procedures. Doctors rely on accurate transfer of meaning between languages and that can only be achieved by interpreters' accurate comprehension of what is to be transferred. In the on-going process of achieving best practice, mutual inter-disciplinary support is a worthwhile investment to all parties. To do that there must be an interdisciplinary understanding.
