This is a first comparative survey of English and German literature of WW I. Itsca. 30 articles concentrate on the presentation of the war experience in poems, novels and plays by combatants, showing the conflicting influences of a predominantly heroic tradition of war literature and of beginning modernism. Also included are essays on the positions of eminent literary scholars and philosophers during the war, on the point of view of woman authors and on war art. The volume thus pioneers a vast and important field of cultural history.
