Into the Fight, April-June 1918, is the fourth installment of the U.S. Army Campaigns of World War I series, covering the American Expeditionary Forces- role in countering the German spring offensives of March-June 1918. The narrative of this volume spans the brutal fighting at Cantigny, Château-Thierry, Belleau Wood, and Vaux, where the inexperienced and untried American soldiers and marines received their first exposure to the grim realities of combat. Yet as the actions of these early campaigns show, both allies and enemies soon learned that the Americans who reached the front in the spring of 1918 were willing and able to fight with the grit and determination needed to achieve victory. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lt. Col. Mark E. Grotelueschen, USAF, is professor of history and director of academics in the Department of History at the United States Air Force Academy, where he holds a Senior Military Faculty position. In addition to teaching courses in military, international, and American history, he is responsible for all history courses taught at the Academy, and serves on the advisory council for the Academy Scholars Program. A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy (1991), he received his M.A. from the University of Calgary in 1998 and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 2003. He is the author of two books, Doctrine Under Trial: American Artillery Employment in World War I and The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I.
