They were gleaned and developed from various sources with the intent of adding context to the need for ministry among the Deaf. When referring to the use of the word deaf in this book, "deaf" is used in reference to the medical/audiological/pathological loss of hearing and "Deaf" is used as it relates to Deaf community and Deaf culture. This book is primarily based on my personal experience, observation and opinion. It is not intended to contradict, criticize or stand above another's opinions or methods of ministry. I pray you will find this book helpful and insightful; especially to those whom God has called to work with the Deaf or those who are considering a Deaf ministry in their church as part of their global missionary effort. Time is short. We must be busy about the Master's business in reaching this greatly under-reached people group.

In April of 1987, one of the largest warships in the world made a port call in Toulon, France. The Aircraft Carrier, USS Nimitz, was an imposing figure in this French port city. She was quietly tucked into the harbor of this major French Navy town. A young Christian Sailor who was on deployment on board Nimitz had the opportunity to visit a small French Baptist Church. There he met a family where the mother and father were Deaf. This sailor was involved in the Deaf ministry at his home church back in Jacksonville, Florida and was excited to meet deaf people from another country. He had the opportunity to do something for this family that they never thought would be possible. He was able to give them a tour of the Nimitz and explain its workings for them. Though the languages were different, there were many similarities and basic communication took place across the world, across cultures and across languages. The sailor left an American Sign Language book and several illustrative Chick tracts with the family. This had a great impact on that young sailor. Today he is a missionary to the Deaf in Peru, South America and the author of this book.
