Intracanal medicaments are used for root canal disinfection. As a part of controlled asepsis their role is secondary to cleaning and shaping of the root canal. The chemical nature of medicaments employed are varied-; they come from a number of different groups, often different chemicals or drugs are combined in a "cock tail" in an attempt to elicit a variety of effects with a single application. Due to advance in medical and research fields new approaches like photoactivated disinfection, ultrasonics, endox, ozone, lasers and electrochemically activated water have been introduced for the disinfection of the root canal. Therefore to inactivate this bacterial inflammatory burden, long lasting antibacterial intracanal medication has to be utilized between the endodontic appointments.
