Service users are increasingly involved in health and social care research, both in terms of representation of their voices, being involved in action research projects and in leading research themselves. This is reflected in government policy to consult service users in reviewing policies and in shaping health and social care services. This edited collection provides examples of research methods with service users along a continuum of involvement as participants through to service user-led research. Service user involvement in research can range from the extremes of being the subject, to being the initiator or investigator, of a research study. The activity of the professional researcher can also range from being the person undertaking the research, to being a partner with, or mentor to, service users.
