The current progress in Internet, mobile, and machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies can be seen as the starting phase of the IoT. The paper starts with a general overview of IOT, then an overview of IOT enabled technologies, protocols and applications is given. A detailed summary of the most upto-date protocols is provided, application issues which help researchers and developers understand the protocol suite to deliver desired functionalities is discussed. A brief summary of some of the key IOT challenges and related research is also provided. Moreover, the relation between IOT and other emerging technologies including big data analytics, cloud computing and fog computing is provided at the end.

I am Dr. E. N. Ganesh having 26 years of experience in teaching and alumnus of IIT Madras. I worked 8 yrs as Principal and 4 years as Dean in Chennai. I am a M.Tech Graduate from IIT Madras in Microelectronics and VLSI Design, and PhD from JNTU Hyderabad in Nanotechnology with Gold Medal. I have Executed 6 Funded Projects with 5 patents granted.
