This book probes the Iranian rural films produced during the period of fast modernisation from the 1960s to 1970s in Iran. As the land reform and grand process of industrialisation produced distinct modern socio-political issues in the rural over the course of nearly two decades, the growing industry of cinema actively participated in the hegemonic battles of the day as it represented the collective problematics. To examine the arrival of modern educational, security, labour and other spaces in the rural, historical materialism offers a propitious theoretical framework which convincingly relates base and superstructure. Thus, to investigate the transformation of signifying practices to the revolutionary level this research draws on ideas from Marx, Gramsci, Raymond Williams, Ernest Bloch and other notable Marxist theorists.
