Several waste treatment technologies exist. Some of the waste treatment technologies available are either established or emerging techniques. In the United Kingdom,a number of significant MSW treatment applications also fall within the established and emerging techniques. Gasification is one amongst the technologies but certain challenges have prevented the technology from being considered an established option in waste management. With this in mind, the work was written to investigate and report the prospects of MSW gasification, present the state of gasification technology and the challenges of the technology in the UK. Furthermore, the work examined the waste hierarchy set out in the Waste Framework Directive and the impact on the availability of feed-stock for gasification. Also, corresponding legislation and the environmental issues arising from gasification process can be found in this piece. Finally the author used RETScreen 4 software and analyzed Syngas (H2),a product of gasification and the energy carrier that can be combusted in engines or gas turbines to generate renewable energy. The work compared the GHG emissions for gas to boiler and gas to engine technologies using Syngas.
