Almost all the rulers of the state from this period bear Muslim names even though most of them cannot be described as Muslims because of their notoriety for worship of traditional deities and ancestors of the land.

Abdul Aziz Shamhuna was born in Tamale, Northern Region, Ghana. Attended Primary,Junior Secondary, Secondary School and Teacher Training College in Northern Region, Ghana. Graduated from Islamic University College, proceeded to University of Ghana where he obtained Master of Philosophy in Religions. A Lecturer at Islamic University College, Ghana.
