The study of the role of religious education is very important for a proper understanding of the characteristics of traditional society. The importance of this monograph is that on the basis of a wide range of sources, documents, and scientific literature it is proved that: the main institutions of Islamic education and enlightenment in Northern Azerbaijan for a long time were mosques, mektebs and madrassas. The development of scientific thought in the country almost to the end of the twentieth century occurred within the framework of the religious education system, which gave it a conservative character, and that only representatives of the Azerbaijani intelligentsia became the founders of the development of religious (Islamic) - secular education in Northern Azerbaijan, which was consigned to oblivion during the Soviet regime and was revived, gained progressive and dynamic development in the late twentieth century.
