The microorganisms associated with marine thermal environments are generally described in four ways on the basis of their habitat: those in the pore spaces and cracks below the surfaces; those on the outer surface of the sulphide deposits, typically as mats; those on and within invertebrates often as symbionts and those within the plume of hydrothermal fluid in the overlying sea water. One study involved a moderately thermophilic Bacillus strain, which grows at 55-65ºc. Similarly, 10 telluride-and selenite-reducing strains of pseudoalteromonas sp which grow at 40-50ºc. Microorganisms are essential for initial colonization and require physical contact between colonizing bacteria and between the bacteria and their host. Biological mineralization undergoes two processes. By one method, mineralization is orchestrated by the organism through an "organic matrix mediated" processes. The other method is characterized by bulk extracellular/intercellular mineral formation. This biological process results in crystal products similar to those expected by crystallization from solutions.
