The line is one of the busiest rail lines in Turkey. The line begins in Istanbul at the Haydarpasa Terminal and ends in Ankara at the Ankara Railway Station. The line is mostly single track although parts of it are double or triple track. The first part of the line started in Istanbul by the Ottoman Government building a line to Izmit in 1872.
