An insiders look at the city Have you seen the modern mosque with the turquoise mihrab Could you find a set of Russian churches hiding on the rooftops Have you visited the wooden house of a Turkish artist in the Beyazit back streets And would you know where to photograph a lamppost in the shape of a giraffe The answer to these and hundreds of other questions can be found in Istanbul The Ultimate Guide by Saffet Emre Tonguc and Pat Yale, the most up-to-date and lavishly illustrated guide to the city on the market. Istanbul The Ultimate Guide covers not just the well-known tourist sites such as the Topkapi Palace and Blue Mosque, but also the more off-the-beaten-track areas of Istanbul such as Yeniköy and Caddebostan that rarely feature in other books. It was a voyage of discovery for both the authors. Saffet introduced Pat to the hidden treasures of the Bosphorus suburbs, while she introduced him to Agva and Polonezköy. Together they explored Cerrahpasa, the Kadinlar Pazari and the back streets of Balat. Most guidebooks for Turks are written by Turks while those for foreigners are written by foreigners. This rare collaborative effort brings together the insider knowledge of a life-long Istanbul resident and the outsider curiosity of a frequent visitor. Says Pat Most visitors to Turkey and that includes guidebook writers - cant read Turkish which means that they cant access all the information available. By working together Saffet and I were able to explore many different sources in both our languages, and come up with a text which is equally well written in both languages.
