Mario Di Fiorino ist der psychiatrische Befürworter des neuen Vorschlags für eine italienische Reform (Senatsgesetz 656). Im März 2002 gründete er zusammen mit Maria Luisa Figueira den Verein Bridging Eastern and Western Psychiatry. Im Jahr 2008 wurde Di Fiorino im Salone dei cinquecento des Palazzo Vecchio in Florenz mit dem Premio Firenze für seine Verdienste um die Psychiatrie ausgezeichnet.
