Amahli, a tall raven-haired mixed-race beauty, copes with Jack's B-17 bomber vanishing in a suspicious 1944 crash over the North Sea. Abandoned, pregnant, and in agony, she vows to never love again. Having defied her mother's warnings about Americans, Amahli resolves to rebuild her mother's trust, nurturing her daughter JJ within the protection of family, and hopes to unite JJ with Jack's family one day. To accomplish this, she finesses a career in a male-dominated profession, gets herself and JJ to the United States, and confronts her fears to let go of the past. Will she be seduced a handsome, romantic-but-manipulative colleague? Revealing her secrets may encourage Jack's brother Andy to help Amahli connect JJ with her grandparents, but his unstable and often cruel mother plots to steal JJ away. Can Amahli and JJ escape to safety? Can she love again?
