James Alan "Jamie" Bates (born February 24, 1968) is a former professional footballer who played for Brentford and Wycombe Wanderers. He was a central defender. Bates joined Brentford as a trainee, signing professional forms in June 1987. He had a loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers in the 1986 87 season, playing one game. He stayed at Griffin Park until transfer deadline day in 1999, and played 526 games for the Bees in all competitions, many of which as captain. He was named as Brentford's Player of the Year in 1995, but also missed a crucial penalty in the Playoff semi-final penalty shootout against Huddersfield. He went on to have a successful end to his career at Wycombe, playing 101 games before retiring in 2001.
