Many different fluid systems can become jammed so that they behave like solids and develop yield stresses; they become rigid and can no longer flow. Examples of such jamming systems are grains that become clogged on flowing out of a hopper, traffic on a highway that becomes stuck when the density gets too high, suspensions under shear that stop flowing as the shearing stress is lowered, and supercooled liquids that freeze into a glassy amorphous state when the temperature is lowered. Jamming looks so similar in so many different systems that one suspects that there should be a common conceptual framework with which to address this phenomenon. However, because the examples of jamming phenomena come from so many different fields it is difficult to get an overview of how the different disciplines treat this subject to see if there really is a meaningful connection between these different transitions from a flowing into a rigid state. This book provides an introduction to the concepts of jamming in a variety of contexts. A general introduction sets forth the problem of jamming and provides an overview of how the different jamming transitions might be thought of as a common phenomenon. In order to come to terms with the interdisciplinary nature of this field, the book contains a series of articles by experts in a variety of specialties. These overviews provide background and discuss the relevance of general issues of jamming to each of the different areas. The main body of the book is a collection of important reprints from literature relevant to the issues of jamming. These are assembled according to thematic topics even though they were often written with particular systems inmind. Jamming and Rheology will be of interest to advanced students and researchers who are interested in learning about and studying this newly emerging interdisciplinary field. Anyone with a background in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, materials science, civil engineering or traffic flow needs to be aware of this exciting new field.
