The Japanese Biographical Archive (JaBA) is a cumulation of 76 biographical reference works (178 volumes in total), published between 1646 and 1999. Their biographical entries were reproduced in a single alphabetical sequence on 425 microfiches. Besides sources dealing with the Japanese emperors and shoguns, the Archive also utilizes biographical reference works covering individuals from all professions and all levels of society: including works on politicians, military persons, samurais, merchants, doctors, writers, artists, and musicians. Special attention has been paid to culturally and religiously defined occupations such as those of the master of tea ceremonies, ikebana artists, waka or haiku poets, and sumo wrestlers. As a result the Japanese Biographical Archive offers a unique overview of Japanese history and of a rich variety of Japanese life styles. The three volumes of the Japanese Biographical Index provide access to the 86,800 personalities included in the Japanese Biographical Archive. The user can tell at a glance whether or not any particular individual appears in the Archive, and if so, where the information is to be found. Each entry specifies every individualâ??s name with his/her biographical dates and profession. References to the exact locations of the entries in the Japanese Biographical Archive, plus the abbreviated titles of the biographical sources are given. A key to the abbreviations used is provided. In addition to the main entries, the index contains some 12,000 cross-references. The Japanese Biographical Index serves primarily as a register to the Japanese Biographical Archive. Thanks to its highly condensed form it greatly aids the search for and selection of individuals listed in the Archive. However, the index is also a valuable tool for biographical research to be used in its own right. Wherever the JaBA is not available, the index will prove to be invaluable, leading the user directly to the original sources. The Japanese Biographical Index provides its user with direct access to the evaluated biographical sources: both the original works in printed form and the microfiche of the Japanese Biographical Archive. It therefore constitutes an essential reference work for anybody interested in the history and culture of Japan.
