INSIDE BONUS Although he was raised in Amarillo, Texas, John David Souther, often known as JD Souther, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 2, 1945. JD's father, who loved jazz, introduced him to music at a young age, inspiring him to have an early interest in a variety of musical genres. He had taught himself how to play the guitar by the time he was a teenager and was already attracted to the combination of jazz, country, and rock that would eventually come to characterize a lot of his work. In the late 1960s, This Man relocated to Los Angeles after his high school graduation, where he got involved in the emerging singer-songwriter movement. Together with Glenn Frey, who would later join the Eagles, he created the combo Longbranch Pennywhistle, and the two of them played locally, taking in the vibrant musical culture of Southern California. Early connections with well-known musicians like Jackson Browne and the Eagles set the stage for his success as a composer later on, helping to shape the sound of the legendary '70s California.
