Es uno de los autores más reconocidos de la literatura infantil y juvenil en Francia, así le avalan los más de veinticinco libros publicados desde 1997. Autor tardío, empezó a escribir a los cuarenta años y como lector siempre se consideró moderado hasta que cayó en sus manos Robinson Crusoe, del que dice que le parecía que una voz salía del texto. Sus libros son lectura obligada en la escuela. Antes de dedicarse por entero a la escritura, ha sido profesor de alemán, profesión que ha compaginado con la de actor, mimo y director de teatro.
