Gettleman graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1990, and Cornell University in 1994 with a B.A. in Philosophy, after which he became a communications officer for Save the Children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University and received a. M. Phil. in June 1996.
