Suffering and death is a universal phenomenon. It causes all living things live in fear, terror, panic and bitterness, when it comes upon them. Death and its forceful agents are the strongest enemies of all living things. They cause suffering and death, leaving the living, left behind, in helplessness, nothingness and hopelessness. This book explores the manner in which John's Gospel presents the authority of Jesus over suffering and death. It tries to describe Jesus' activities, analyzing them from the viewpoint of John, seeing how John deals with Jesus' authority over death and its agents. Reference is made to John 11:1-44, the story of Lazarus, how Jesus' presence to the helpless community made a difference. Then, how his presence to the helpless cultures and societies, with a citation of the Chewa worldview, continues to make a difference. The conclusion comes with an option to choose. A choice; to belong to Jesus' community of believers, that has hope transcending suffering and death, or to remain in the old community, where death and its agents still have their rule.
