Autorenporträt
Otto von Gierke (1841 - 1921) war ein bedeutender Rechtshistoriker. Gierke studierte an den Universitäten Berlin und Heidelberg Rechtswissenschaften und promovierte 1860 bei Carl Gustav Homeyer. Die Habilitation erfolgte 1967. Nach seiner Teilnahme am Deutsch-Französischen Krieg folgte er einem Ruf an die Universität Breslau. 1884 wurde er ordentlicher Professor in Heidelberg und wechselte 1887 an die Universität Berlin, deren Rektor er 1902 wurde. Gierke hat die Rechtswissenschaft insbesondere im Bereich des Genossenschafts- und Körperschaftsrechts nachhaltig geprägt.
