Autorenporträt
After I retired from 24 years of teaching, I moved to the Monterey area of California and, at a friend's suggestion, joined him in a memoir writing class in Carmel, California. After several years of short essays and descriptions, I longed to write something more substantive and began thinking of a novel. I had been intrigued for many years with the story of Louis Pasteur's last great challenge, the cure of rabies, the most feared disease in Western European History. In those times, everyone had either known or heard of friends or locals who had died of it. For all practical purposes, there was no other fate. This was the dragon that Louis Pasteur had to slay and I wanted to write about the battle.
