Israel Ben Yosef was a proud member of the Jewish Reform movement and as a Rabbi represented its ideas. In addition he was a philosopher and a poet whose boundless love for people and whose communal drive drew him into the service of Progressive Jewish congregations where his depth of Jewish knowledge and human warmth was palpable. He was an academic, hence the connection with Professor Wiehn, who recognized and admired his scholarly discipline. For the present booklet Prof Wiehn has selected some of Israel Ben Yosef's sermons that he had assembled, edited and published previously in two commemorative volumes in German, entitled: Lebendiges Judentum – Betrachtungen eines Rabbiners (1995). As a proud representative of Progressive Judaism he addressed his sermons to a liberal audience. His thoughts are profoundly connected with Jewish tradition. They are characterized by a special vibrancy and vitality, a feeling for transition and continuity. His focus ranges from the literary, psychological, phenomenological, anthropological and socio-historic perspectives of Torah-learning, which he conveys in a simple, lucid language. He shied away from abstruseness, always reaching out to his listeners, as these sermons which cover one annual Jewish festival cycle exemplify.
