In diesem Sammelband werden Vorträge publiziert, die von Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Nationen – vor allem aus Indien, Pakistan, Deutschland, USA und den zentralasiatischen Republiken – während des internationalen und interdisziplinären Symposiums „Karakorum – Hindukush – Himalaya. Dynamics of Change“ gehalten wurden, das 1995 in Islamabad/Pakistan stattfand. Das Symposium wurde im Rahmen des DFG-Schwerpunktprogramms „Kulturraum Karakorum“ (1989–1998) veranstaltet. Im Zentrum der Beiträge stehen die sich verändernden Beziehungen zwischen Mensch, Kultur und Umwelt in den Hochgebirgsräumen von Karakorum, Pamir, Hindukusch und Himalaya, vor allem unter aktueller Perspektive.
