Avril O'Reilly was inspired by talented hairdressers in Brixton to create books for the kids in her neighborhood. She created Bekki the Fairy to give black children a book character who looked like them. Black characters are underrepresented in mainstream literature and Avril has donated copies of A Fairy in the Family to groups all over the world who promote literacy for black children.
