An example of a healthy coping mechanism that allows those who experience bullying to overcome depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma is playing sports. This story is centered around Kevin, a quiet and shy kid who experiences bullying at home, in school, and on his basketball team. Kevin has to overcome his fears, self-esteem and other issues to make it through his first year at Lincoln Junior High School. Kevin's goal is to gain enough courage to help himself understand how to deal with his emotions around his physical appearance through basketball and discovering his personal support team. By using sports to deal with his anxiety, trauma, embarrassment, and being different, Kevin sets a healthy example for others to follow. In the this story, the reader will take on this emotional journey with Kevin and reflect on their own experiences by answering a series of comprehension questions after each "Quarter."

James Thomas was born and raised in New York City, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Growing up in Amsterdam Houses (a New York City Housing Authority [NYCHA]), he developed a fascination for thegame of basketball. His experience and passion for the sport allowed himto learn leadership, organizational, decision-making, and mental tenacity skills through competing on Amateur Athletic Union, High School, and College-level teams. These very skills have also allowed him to successfully mentor youth and create a bridge to help those who have experienced or are currently experiencing the same challenges James faced as an adolescent.James is a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, wherehe received his Masters Degree in Public Administration (M.P.A.). James currently works for the City of New York as a Senior Analyst. James' two decades of professional experience in public service continue to guide him in working with the community by encouraging, inspiring, and teaching young people that being different is unique; to always be yourself; and to forever have hope.James not only values community, but he also cherishes his friends and family. In his spare time he enjoys listening to live music, watching sports, trying new restaurants, and traveling with his wife, Danielle, who he has been married to since 2018.
