Wendel Sloan, who now lives in Dallas, is the retired Director of Media Relations for Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. He also wrote a weekly column for "The Amarillo Daily News" and "The Eastern New Mexico News"--the genesis for the essays. He has won numerous state, regional and national awards from press and higher education organizations. In 2019, Sloan won national awards for humorous columns and feature writing from the National Federation of Press Women-his fourth and fifth national awards from the organization. He is a sports fanatic and at times has played football, basketball, baseball, soccer, rugby, tennis, racquetball. pickleball, volleyball, washers, cornhole, tetherball, kickball, doge-ball, badminton, croquet, golfed, ran the 50-yard, 100-yard, 200-yard, quarter-mile, mile and pole-vaulted in track and field and bowled. The youngest of six children (30 minutes younger than his twin sister), Sloan was born in Midland in West Texas and raised in Mt.
